Flu Shots
Flu shots are now available in Southaven, Mississippi at the Family Medical Clinic of North Mississippi. The flu shot is a seasonal vaccine that provides protection against a number of flu viruses. The flu can vary from being fairly mild to severe, with a wide range of symptoms. The vaccine can provide you with protection from the flu for about six months.
Who Should Get a Flu Shot?
The CDC recommends that everyone over the age of 6 months get a flu shot. There are some rare exceptions to this recommendation, and you should talk to your doctor if you think you may fall into this category. Getting a flu shot is especially important for those who are at a higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications. The flu shot has been approved for use in children as young as 6 months old, pregnant women, and senior adults over the age of 65. It is also approved for use in those who have certain chronic health conditions.
When Should You Get a Flu Shot?
It is recommended to get a flu shot before the flu starts spreading in your community. It takes two weeks after the shot for antibodies to develop in your body and start providing you with protection. Keep in mind that some young children will need two rounds of flu shots, timed four weeks apart, so time your child’s flu shot accordingly.
The CDC recommends that people get their flu shot before the end of October, when flu season begins. It isn’t recommended to get your shot too early (such as in July or August), as reduced protection against the flu has been seen in individuals who get their flu shot at that time.
